What does private colorectal surgery cost in the UK?

Mr Najib Daulatzai
Consultant Robotic, Colorectal and General Surgeon
Consultant surgeon at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, with private practice across London and Hertfordshire. Specialist in robotic and minimally invasive colorectal surgery.
Pricing is one of the topics that patients are most reluctant to raise, and one that I am always happy to discuss openly. Transparency about costs is something I consider an important part of patient-centred care. Here is a general overview of how private surgical pricing works in the UK.
What determines the cost?
The total cost of private surgery is made up of several components: the surgeon's fee, the anaesthetist's fee, and the hospital facility fee (which covers theatre time, nursing care, the hospital room, and consumables). For straightforward procedures, these are often quoted together as a package price. For more complex surgery, they may be quoted separately.
Does insurance cover the cost?
If you have private medical insurance, the majority of the cost is typically covered, subject to your policy terms and any excess. I am recognised by all major insurers including Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, and Healix. Before your appointment, please contact your insurer to confirm that the proposed consultation and procedure are covered under your policy and to obtain an authorisation number. If you do not have the authorisation number before your consultation, you may be responsible for the full cost.
What about self-pay patients?
Self-funding patients are very welcome. Many patients are surprised to find that self-pay pricing for consultations and straightforward procedures is more accessible than they had assumed. Fixed-price packages are available for many common procedures, providing certainty about costs from the outset. For an accurate quote for your specific procedure, please contact the secretary directly. We will provide a clear breakdown of all costs before you commit to anything.
Is there a consultation fee?
Yes. An initial consultation fee applies. This covers a thorough history and examination, review of any existing investigations, and a full discussion of your diagnosis and treatment options. The fee is quoted clearly at the time of booking. For insured patients, this is typically reimbursable under your policy.
