If you are considering a private colonoscopy in London, you may find the process less complicated than you expect. Here is a straightforward guide to how it works.

Do you need a GP referral?

A GP referral is not strictly required for a private colonoscopy, though it is helpful. A referral letter provides important background information, your symptoms, relevant medical history, and any previous investigations, that allows me to plan your procedure appropriately. If you would like to self-refer, please contact the secretary directly and we will ask you to complete a brief medical questionnaire.

What is the process?

The usual pathway is as follows. You contact the secretary and arrange a consultation appointment, typically available within a week. At the consultation, I take a full history, discuss your symptoms, and assess whether colonoscopy is the right investigation for you. If it is, the procedure is booked at a mutually convenient time, usually within a short interval. You receive detailed preparation instructions in advance. The colonoscopy itself takes 20 to 45 minutes, and I discuss the findings with you before you leave.

Where is the procedure performed?

I perform private colonoscopies at Spire Bushey Hospital and HCA The Wellington Hospital in London. Both offer a comfortable, well-equipped private endoscopy environment with experienced nursing teams.

Does insurance cover it?

In most cases, yes, private medical insurance policies cover diagnostic colonoscopy when there is a clinical indication. You should contact your insurer in advance to confirm coverage and obtain an authorisation number before your appointment. Self-pay colonoscopy is also available; please contact the secretary for current pricing.

How quickly can I be seen?

Private patients can typically be seen for an initial consultation within one week. The colonoscopy itself is usually arranged within a short interval thereafter, depending on clinical urgency and availability.
